Awesome Summer Internship Opportunity at the Smithsonian
February 22nd, 2012
The Young Ambassadors Program (YAP) is a national program for graduating high school seniors aimed at fostering the next generation of Latino leaders in the arts, sciences, and humanities via the Smithsonian Institution and its resources. YAP is a college preparatory and leadership program encouraging participants to explore various academic and career opportunities through the lens of the Latino experience.
Students with an interest in and commitment to the arts, sciences, and humanities as it pertains to Latino communities and cultures are selected to travel to Washington, D.C. for a week-long seminar at the Smithsonian Institution. This enrichment opportunity is a leadership development and skill-building training conducted by renowned experts in their respective fields. It exposes youth to a wide array of academic disciplines promoting higher education and encouraging youth to explore and understand Latino identity and embrace their own cultural heritage through visits to the Smithsonian’s Latino collections and one-on-one interaction with anthropologists, artists, curators, historians, scientists and other professionals. Following the training seminar, students participate in a four-week interdisciplinary education internship in museums and other cultural institutions in 16 regions across the United States and Puerto Rico, including Smithsonian-affiliated organizations. This hands-on component allows students to gain transferable knowledge and apply the skills acquired during the training seminar to their internship assignments. This program is made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund.

Ashley’s Path to College
October 24th, 2011
Hello Philadelphia, my name is Ashley Dunbar. I attend Overbook high school. I’m now entering my junior year, the most important year of high school. Going back to school was easy because I was ready to see my friends and get this year over with. Yeah timing myself to wake up early again was a little messy but I’m good now. My classes are challenging this year but with the help of my teachers and the student success center, I should be fine. The student success center is a place where students including myself can get all the help they need to pass those harder courses and also get help with college.
My school changed this year, we have a lot of new rules but in a way I think it’s great because I’m learning better. The kids don’t really like the rule of a blue vest we have to wear but I say why let one little thing ruin your education? Just put the vest on, why let that get in your way? The vest is a part of our new uniform, it goes on top of our button down collar shirts; it makes us look very professional.
I was blessed to have my favorite teacher from sophomore year, Ms. B, again, and I don’t have any problems with the rest of my teachers either. Sometimes I wake up and wish I could fall back to sleep but I think about my future and say “I won’t have a future without my education”. I see my friends late, missing days from school. I try to encourage my friends to do better and make a change quick because there’s nothing else important right now. We see a lot of people on the streets that have nothing going on for themselves; it’s time for our generation to change that. We the kids of the Future, So why not change the Future if we can. Some people here the word Philly and already say “oh them kids not making it anywhere”. Shouldn’t we prove them wrong? We have a lot of great opportunities if we just use them instead of playing and complaining.
My mom encourages me and lets me know every day how important education is. Even if you messed up in the past, you still have a chance to change. Everyone is entitled to their dreams; you should never quit, nor bring yourself down, and always be a LEADER. Make your parents proud and show them that all their hard work to raise you paid off. Don’t you want to be someone with a legacy? I know I do, being only 16 with optimistic dreams to succeed; education will stamp my passport to a beautiful future. I think going to school is very important because I love money and the more education you have the more money you will earn. I’m really look forward to college because I love meeting new people and I want to experience being on my own and to just have fun while learning. College is not for everyone but you will never know if it’s for you if you never try to go. Even if you’re not fit for college trade school is not bad, I just don’t want to see us not doing anything in life when everything is right in front of us. Education is the passport to the future, work hard now and it will pay off later. “And that’s what’s happening in Philly Education,” we’re going to make it, we just have to believe in ourselves!

Five Most Important Steps to Take If You Want To Go To College
July 11th, 2011
- If you’re in 9th grade, you should start to plan ahead NOW to choose the high school classes you will need to get into the college of your choice. Check with your college guidance counselor to make sure you’re on the right track.
- If you are in high school, you’ll need to take a college admission test to get admitted to college. Take the PSATs (which is a practice test), prior to taking the SAT or ACT test. Check out the Free Library near you for resources to study for the tests. They have books to help you study and also provide free SAT prep classes throughout the year. They provide free SAT prep classes and basic college prep workshops throughout the year.
- Paying for college is sometimes the biggest challenge for all students – whether you’re currently in school or not. You need to plan for how to pay for college way before you enroll.
- If you need financial aid, the first step is to complete the FAFSA form (which stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to find out how much money you are eligible to receive to go to college. You can find information on organizations that can help by “>clicking here.
